Resource Trunk: Volga German Immigrants to Kansas

Grades 4-6, with ideas for other group applications

The Kansas State Historical Society has put together a resource trunk for Grades 4-6 that follows a family’s journey from Germany to Russia to Kansas. Read an immigrant’s journal. Explore traditions. Through the experiences of Volga German immigrants students learn about immigration. Historical information, replica artifacts, music, historic photographs, and student activities tell the story of settlement in Ellis County. There are also ideas for using this trunk with other grades and with youth groups. Links to descriptions of 14 activity packets are provided along with a listing of the contents of the trunk.

Questions about the Volga German Resource Trunk should be directed to the Education and Outreach Division of the Kansas Historical Society, 6425 SW Sixth Avenue, Topeka, KS 66615-1099; 785-272-8681, ext. 251, Fax 785-272-8682; or education@kshs.org.
