Grand Opening, October 24-25

Concordia President Charles Schlimpert joined Steve Schreiber, Ed Wagner, and Brent Mai in cutting the ribbon for the Grand Opening of the Center for Volga German Studies in its new location in the new Concordia University Library on Saturday, October 24th.

By the end of the day, more than 200 people had visited the facility from the following locales across the Pacific Northwest:

From Oregon: Aloha, Beaverton, Clackamas, Glide, Gresham, Hillsboro, Milwaukie, Oregon City, Portland, Saint Helens, Salem, Scappoose, Sherwood, Tigard, West Linn, and Wilsonville.

From Washington: Chinook, Enumclaw, Kelso, Kennewick, LaCenter, Lynden, Puyallup, Ridgefield, Seattle, Spokane, Vancouver, Walla Walla, Washougal, and Yakima.

Another 50 people attended the Volga German Worship Service on Sunday, October 25th.

9:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Genealogy Workshop
Research specialists will be on hand for the colonies of Ährenfeld,
Brunnental, Eckheim, Frank, Holstein, Hussenbach, Kautz, Kolb, Kraft,
Kratzke, Neu-Norka, Norka, Pobochnaya, Schönfeld, Walter, and
Yagodnaya Polyana among others.

2:00 p.m. Presentation: Richard Scheuerman

18th Century Great Northern Expedition."

3:00 p.m. Presentation: Sherrie Stahl
"Gathering All the Data Types: Photos, Tape Recordings, Video
Recordings, Family Histories, and Books Bring History Alive."

4:00 p.m. Presentation: Steve Schreiber
"The Volga Germans of Portland."

5:00 p.m. Presentation: Brent Mai
"Volga Germans on the Move: Where They Came from and
Where They're Going."
